Israel rattled as 7.2-magnitude quake strikes northeast Iraq

It initially said the quake was of a magnitude 7.2, before revising it to 7.3.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.3 temblor was centred 20 miles southwest of Halabja, near the northeastern border with Iran.

The epicenter of the natural disaster is 32 kilometers southwest of Halabja near the Iranian border, data from the USGS website showed.

Kurdish health officials said as well as at least four people being killed there were 50 injured.

The semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency reported that at least 14 provinces had been impacted by the quake.

Shocks were felt in several Iranian cities, with eight villages damaged and electricity cut in others, local media said. In 2003, a 6.6 magnitude flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.

Residents of Turkey's south-eastern city of Diyarbakir also reported feeling a strong tremor, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the city.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds injured after a strong quake shook the Iran-Iraq border region on Sunday.

At least six people were killed in the western Iranian town of Qasr-e Shirin, Iran television said.
