Fueling Up: Drivers will pay the highest Thanksgiving gas prices since 2014.

While AAA expects most USA drivers will pay the highest Thanksgiving gas prices since 2014, the vast majority of holiday travelers (89.3 percent) are still planning to hit the road. The Maine Turnpike Authority is predicting traffic volume will top last year's record-breaking 1 million transactions by about 2 percent, or an extra 20,000 tolls paid.

Many people across the region began plotting their course of travel early. AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins warns drivers, "dead batteries tend to come when people are leaving their lights on or they're keeping their cell phones plugged in, and it just drains out the battery".

The expense to rent a auto for the weekend is higher than past years. Wednesday is going to be the coldest day of the week with highs in the upper 30s. Another thing that travelers should keep in mind is the airport crowds, particularly on the day before Thanksgiving, arguably the busiest travel day of the year.

Tennessee's prices - among the least expensive in the country - remained below the national average at $2.31 per gallon, a 35-cent increase compared to a year ago. "But the biggest percentage growth - a 5 percent increase - is taking place at the airports".

Fuller skies: The largest growth in holiday travel is by air travel, at five percent, with 3.95 million travelers.

Vicky Evans, assistant vice president in travel sales, says the end-of-year holiday season could be the busiest in more than a decade. By doing so, you're not only creating a more pleasant environment, you're also helping protect your health by managing your stress. Experts say that's because tickets are the cheapest they've been in the past four years. The state average rose 8 cents in 10 days.

According to our Weather Team 18 meteorologist Amber Hardwick, "We are tracking cool and calm weather for much of the holiday weekend, which is great news for those traveling for Thanksgiving". Through October, 34,365 people had arrived or left through the local airport. "I've done that before and that would double your travel time".

"I'm driving all the way from Freehold, New Jersey to Rochester, New York to pick up my mother-in-law and brother-in-law, and now we're traveling back to New Jersey for a family Thanksgiving", said Ernest Brodie.
