Record-breaking heat wave hits western United States for Thanksgiving

Dickinson, Williston, Minot and Jamestown also reached record-setting temperatures on Thursday, according to NWS.

Records for November 23 temperatures were also set in Long Beach (90 degrees) and at Los Angeles International Airport (91 degrees), where both the previous records had been set in 1990, the agency said. The record for this day is 89, set in 1950.

Temperatures soared into the 90s across a large swath of Southern California in an autumn heat wave that peaked Wednesday. Burbank reached 95 degrees, breaking the 1950 record of 91; Sandberg hit 76 degrees, breaking the 1995 record of 71; Palmdale reached 81 degrees, barely beating the record of 80 set in 1962.

Thursday's high at Santa Barbara Airport is forecast to be a relatively chilly 83 degrees.

The abnormal warm temperatures in the state were caused by a broad, high pressure pattern in the western United States, particularly southwestern, which also saw higher-than-normal temperatures on Thanksgiving, according to Alex Edwards, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Bismarck.
