The Madras High Court. had, early this week, directed the poll panel to conduct the byelection to the RK Nagar Assembly constituency, lying vacant for almost a year, by December 31.

The EC on Friday declared the dates for the by-election to R K Nagar seat, which fell vacant following the death of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on December 5 past year. The commission had rescinded the bypoll scheduled on April 12 two days before the polling, citing distribution of money power and other allurements in the constituency.

While Dhinakaran announced his candidature for the December 21 bypoll yesterday, the EPS-OPS faction of the AIADMK and the BJP are yet to declare the names of their nominees.

The by-election scene in Tamil Nadu hotted up on Saturday with the DMK renominating its candidate Marudhu Ganesh in the R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency, and immediately got support from the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruttai Katchi (VCK) and All India Forward Bloc.

The schedule drawn up by the EC stated that filing of nominations could begin on Monday, the day in which a notification would be issued on the gazettes of the respective State governments. Both factions had named candidates.

The eight sailors are in good condition while rescue crews continue to search for the other three, the navy says. The incident occurred around 2.45pm local time (00:45am EST) and recovery is underway.

The united AIADMK - the Palaniswami-Panneerselvam combine, which recently won the right to use the two leaves symbol - will field Madhusudhanan.

The poll was cancelled in April amidst strong allegations of a cash for vote scam.

When asked whether he thought the byelection would be held in a free and fair manner, Mr. Stalin, noting that the DMK had approached the court in the recent past, said, "Now, we will face it [the byelection] in a democratic manner, and the DMK will win it with the support of its allies".

Soundararajan, however, said the symbol of "Hat" which was given to the T.T.V. Dinakaran faction during the countermanded election should not be allotted to them this time because it is associated with the corrupt practices adopted by Dinakaran earlier. It has to be seen whether she would contest this time.
