The Full Moon on Sunday night marked the first and only supermoon of 2017.

Clear skies across most of the country made for great viewing conditions, with many would-be astronomers climbing Auckland's volcanos to get the ideal shot as the moon rose over the horizon just before 9pm. 22News videographer Don Sutherland captured this video Monday morning. December's full moon appears bigger and brighter in the sky as it sits closer than average to Earth.

The January 31 supermoon will also be the second full Moon of the month. A new moon is the first phase in the lunar cycle that occurs when the moon is in conjunction with the sun - but is not visible from Earth.

The most recent supermoon was around a year ago on November 14th, 2016.

Netflix fills a sci-fi hole in its originals lineup with Altered Carbon

There are interesting skywatching events every year, but 2017 has been particularly generous, with the eclipse drawing millions to peer skyward and plenty of cool moon action as well, but it's still not done. That often causes the moon to shine with a reddish hue, in what's known as a 'blood moon'.

We'll also see two blue moons in 2018.

Astronomers say the best time to catch a glimpse of it is either right after sunset, or minutes before the next sunrise.

With the moon approaching perigee, night sky photographers set out to shoot the big, glowing satellite this weekend. Zimmer stood miles away on the other side of Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, to capture this impressive view of the supermoon.
