At Least Three Reported Killed In Aztec High Shoot Shooting

The San Juan County Sheriff Department is responding to a shooting at Aztec High School in Aztec, NM.

ABC affiliate KOAT, citing Aztec police, report that two people were shot - though their conditions were not specified - and that the suspect is dead. Authorities in New Mexico said on Twitter that the shooter was among the the deceased.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that according to San Juan County Sheriff Ken Christesen, three people, believed to be students, are dead.

Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye said in a statement that all schools in the area were placed on preventative lockdown as a precaution.

The New Mexico State Police were taking over the investigation. Aztec, a community with fewer than 6,000 residents, is about 16 miles northeast of Farmington, N.M. Mike Heal, the chief of the Aztec Police Department, did not indicate whether two of the dead were students or adults.

Other schools in the area also were locked down, and authorities were setting up staging areas where parents could gather and wait for more information.
