Obama eclipses Trump in most popular Twitter posts of 2017

It was a year in which nearly every sector of society was mashed together or clashing on social media, with the "Tweeter in Chief", President Donald Trump, leading the way.

Three tweets by former USA leader Obama made it onto Twitter's Top 10 list for this year but there were none from Trump, despite his prolific use of the platform.

Between hurricanes, white supremacists and politics, it was a pretty dark year for the most popular tweets on Twitter.

Although President Donald Trump's Twitter account regularly makes worldwide headlines and he has bragged about his "very powerful" social media reaching 100 million people, Obama has more followers and more retweets by far.

Mr. Obama's tweet as President on January 2 - "It's been the honour of my life to serve you".

He said the targeting of U.S. state media outlets in Russia could legitimise future restrictions on both global and Russian outlets.


Obama's tweet, "No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin or his background or his religion", was the second most-retweeted tweets of the year.

Ariana Grande's tweet after the tragic Manchester Bombing at her May 22 concert in England received 1.1 million retweets. I'm asking you to believe-not in my ability to create change, but in yours. "You made me a better leader and a better man", was another most popular tweets of 2017.

The top political activism hashtags also focused on Trump, with #resist and #ImpeachTrump occupying spots one and three on that top-10 list, while #MAGA and #TrumpTrain landed came in second and fourth, respectively. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up! John McCain, who disclosed he has brain cancer in September, was the third most liked tweet of the year.
