The Frenchman scored in the 88th minute to rescue a point for Arsenal in their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday.

The Gunners, who will face Swedish side Ostersund in the last 32 of the Europa League, fell behind early at Southampton as Charlie Austin gave the hosts a third-minute lead following some indecisive Arsenal defending.

"I must say I am very frustrated as in the second half there was a lot of time-wasting", Wenger said.

"Overall, the spirit was great".

But the Gunners will feel it was two points dropped in their pursuit of a top-four spot.

There are a lot of games in December, so I'm sure he's going to get a start and if he's coming on scoring goals that's massive for the team and it was an important goal for him today.

"The answer is the authority of the referees and to put it in the head of the players to respect the game and play".

Arsene Wenger's men recovered their poise and some swashbuckling attacking play as they sought an equaliser before half time made for a captivating contest. It is not the 28-year-old's natural game, but he fulfilled his duties diligently and worked hard before his substitution in the final five minutes.

Giroud has yet to start any league game this season, but Wenger paid tribute to the striker's ability to deliver off the bench when it matters.

It was Giroud's 17th goal as a substitute in the Premier League, matching the record he now jointly holds with former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. "He is mentally extremely strong as well", Wenger said.
