Gas prices drop in RI, Mass. just in time for holidays

Nationwide, AAA expects one-third of all Americans on the move during the period between December 23 and January 1, marking the highest year-end holiday travel volume on record, according to a AAA news release. "AAA forecasts a record-setting 97.4 million Americans will take a road trip during the final 10 days of the year".

The busiest travel days are expected to be Wednesday and Thursday during rush hour as holiday travelers and commuters heading home from work converge on local highways.

Average retail gasoline prices in Chattanooga dropped another 3.3 cents per gallon in the past week as Chattanooga continued to offer motorists the cheapest fuel in Tennessee.

Including the change in gas prices in Chattanooga during the past week, prices on Sunday were 9.6 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 11.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The current national average to be $2.43.

So far this year, the highest average price in Florida was $2.73 on September 9 and the lowest was $2.13 on July 17.

Gas Prices Drop 3.3 Cents In Chattanooga

Adding to the declining trend, USA refineries switch late in the year to a winter blend of gasoline, which is less expensive to make because more steps are needed with the summer blend to prevent excessive evaporation.

The average price in Florida increased from $2.35 a gallon on August 30 to $2.41 the following day and continued to rise throughout the week as Florida motorists waited in long lines to fill their tanks.

AAA expects gasoline demand to weaken throughout the winter, which translates to better prices at the pump.

Though the gas price will be the highest in years, it's also down from where prices were at Thanksgiving.

Gas price tracker GasBuddy projects Christmas travelers will pay an average of $2.39 a gallon across the USA, the highest price since 2013, when gas sold for $3.26 a gallon.
