Domenech, who married Meghan, McCain's 33-year-old daughter in late November in Arizona, said his father-in-law was looking forward to spending the holidays in the Grand Canyon state.

'As ever, he remains grateful to his physicians for their excellent care, and his friends and supporters for their encouragement and good wishes, ' the statement said.

McCain in July was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a deadly form of brain cancer, which was revealed after he underwent a surprise emergency July 14 craniotomy to remove a blood clot above his left eye.

McCain was hospitalized Wednesday while receiving chemotherapy treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda and at the nearby National Institutes of Health.

In its statement on Sunday, McCain's office provided an assessment from Dr. Mark Gilbert, chief of neuro-oncology at the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute.

"Senator McCain has responded well to treatment he received at Walter Reed Medical Center for a viral infection and continues to improve", Gilbert said. A doctor says he is also "responding positively" to ongoing treatment for brain cancer.

As CNN explains, Senate Republicans only need to carry a majority of senators present on the floor for the bill to pass.

As a result, McCain will not be in Washington to vote on the GOP's tax bill vote, which is expected to take place early in the week.

Mr. Trump said he had spoken with Mr. McCain's wife and wished her well. He added: "But the word is John will come back if we need his vote".

CBS News is reporting that Republican Sen. The bill appeared to have unanimous support from the Republican Senate conference, with all 52 senators signaling they would vote yes. Marco Rubio of Florida and Bob Corker of Tennessee last week and should have enough votes for the GOP measure.

"He looks forward to returning to Washington in January".

The House and Senate are scheduled to vote this week on Trump's top legislative accomplishment, a sweeping tax package. His presence means the GOP can lose one member of its caucus and still pass the bill.
