The combined gold was valued at more than $7,000 by Tulsa Gold & Silver, which matched all red kettle donations during the past two Saturdays with $25,000. Funds collected stay local and help families in need at Christmas and all year round.

The Salvation Army's Major Roy Williams says gold coins aren't usually found in the Louisville area so "it's a true blessing".

The Salvation Army's goal is to raise $440,000 as part of their annual Christmas campaign, which includes its Christmas Kettle Campaign.

"For me, it really started in 2005 when I went down to Louisiana during the Hurricane Katrina clean-up effort", she said.

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor will ring bells on behalf of the Salvation Army throughout the community. "We can't do this without volunteers, there is just no way", Stewart said.

"It's not going to be like what it's been in years prior because there's so much online purchases", Hughes said. It is the last day of the campaign as the kettles aren't put out on Sundays.

Hughes said even though The Salvation Army will likely see a drop in donations this year, a bright spot in the campaign has been a consistent mystery donator.

"They don't ask for themselves, but to give to others", O'Mara said.

In 2015, a man kicked, punched, and threw a donation bucket at a blind Salvation Army bell ringer in Greenburgh, New York, outside a Smashburger. "But we are still having less kettle sites".
