Army Major, 3 Jawans Killed After Pakistan Violates Ceasefire In J&k

An Army Officer and three Jawans were martyred in Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked cease fire violation on Indian Army posts in Rajouri sector on Saturday afternoon, official spokesman here said.

At least four Indian soldiers were killed on Saturday in Pakistani firing along the highly militarised de facto border that divides the disputed region of Kashmir between the nuclear-armed rivals, Indian officials said. The fourth soldier had not been named till evening. The injured soldier has been airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

The Army, in a statement, said that Indian troops retaliated "strongly and effectively".

According to reports, the deceased major has been identified as Prafool Kumar of 120 Infantry Brigade.

Major Ambadas, 32, belonged to Bhandara, Maharashtra and is survived by wife Ms Avoli Moharkar.

There was no immediate response from Pakistani authorities to the incident.

Two soldiers were seriously wounded in the firing from across the LOC. Sepoy Pargat Singh, aged 30 years, belonged to Karnal, and is survived by his wife Ramanpreet Kaur and a son.

The violence was sparked by the killing of a popular young rebel leader by government forces in July a year ago.

The Indian and Pakistani armies had agreed on a ceasefire along the LoC, the IB and along Actual Ground Position Line at Siachen glacier in November 2003.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has paid rich tributes to the slain army men.

Singh while expressing condolences with the bereaved families, prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls.
