The daughter of Black Lives Matter icon Eric Garner died Saturday after a week-long hospital stay following a heart attack.

A video of Eric Garner, in a police chokehold complaining he could not breathe, sparked national protests.

Garner reportedly suffered "major brain damage" from a heart attack she had last week and died at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday morning after being in a coma since December 23. Her mother, Esaw Snipes-Garner, said her daughter went into cardiac arrest during an asthma attack and had since been in a coma. During his weekly telecast, Sharpton said "the media will say Erica died of a heart attack but that's only partially true because her heart was already broken when she couldn't get justice for her father", per Buzzfeed News. "I have had the privilege of joining with her at a number of events and was deeply impressed with her courage and insights", Sanders tweeted Friday. "The police are killing our people - that's reason enough not to fight amongst ourselves", she wrote. She was good. She only pursued right, no matter what.

Garner became a civil rights activist after video of her father's chokehold death at the hands of a NY police officer went viral and his final words "I can't breathe" became a rallying cry for police reform activists. An autopsy confirmed that while Garner had dealt with obesity and asthma, the chokehold had also played a role in his fatal heart attack. A jury voted not to indict Pantaleo on criminal charges and he remains on the force. News of her hospitalization and Saturday passing prompted an outpouring of support from high profile progressive activists and politicians, including Vermont Sen.

After his death, Erica became an activist and a critic of police brutality. In a series of tweets after the meeting, Erica Garner again stressed that she wanted to see progress on the investigation. "She left on her own terms".

Tributes have been pouring in from fellow human rights activists, with many leaving the message "Rest in power" to honor the political activist and mother of two.
