The shootings occurred after deputies responded to a call at about 5:15 a.m. local time to what they thought was a domestic problem at an apartment complex but which turned out to be a disturbance unrelated to any domestic dispute.

One of the deputies who was shot is Jeff Pelle, the son of Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle. During the investigation, shots were fired and multiple deputies were injured, the agency reported. It's also minutes from Columbine, where, in 1999, two teens gunned down 12 students and one teacher at that neighborhood's high school, and wounded 21 more students, before taking their own lives. "It was nearly immediately after that" that the suspect shot the officers. The sheriff's office tweeted he is believed to be "no longer a threat".

Parrish was with the sheriff's office for seven months.

According to Linda Watson, a spokesperson for Sky Ridge Medical Center, the hospital received three patients involved in the incident who are all in non-critical condition. "Please avoid this area".

A major road was shut down after the shootout in Highlands Ranch, and residents in the vicinity were asked to shelter in place, and avoid windows and exterior walls.

The authorities said an emergency shelter has been set up following the shooting.

The scene was videotaped and posted on the Douglas County sheriff's Facebook page under the heading: "Motorcade for our fallen deputy".
