Local Kmart store to close

39 Sears stores are also shutting down, including locations at the Northwest Arkansas Mall in Fayetteville and the Central Mall in Fort Smith.

In November, Sears announced that the city's other Kmart, on Henderson Drive, would be closing this month.

The move comes as the retailer closes more than 100 Sears and Kmart nationwide. Close-out sales will begin January 12.

CNBC reported that Sears didn't say how many employees would be impacted by the closings, but a majority of the jobs are part-time positions and eligible employees would receive severance.

Sears Holdings is the parent company of both Sears and Kmart retail stores.

"Sears Holdings continues its strategic assessment of the productivity of our Kmart and Sears store base and will continue to right size our store footprint in number and size".

Sears is the Berkshire Mall's only original anchor store, having opened with the mall in 1970.
