Teacher Arrested at School Board Meeting After Questioning Superintendent Contract

Addressing the decision to remove the teacher, a spokesperson for the board said that the meeting had been set up to discuss the superintendent's contract and not the employees' salary.

Video of the incident was first posted by local station KATC and a 12-minute version was also uploaded to YouTube. She was later removed in handcuffs.

According to ABC 13, Hargrave attempted to ask how the superintendent, Jerome Puyau, was able to get a raise when the teachers hadn't in years. After posing another question, an Abbeville city marshal on duty at the meeting grabbed Hargrave and removed her from the meeting.

Deyshia Hargrave, a middle school teacher in the Vermilion Parish school system, was videotaped being escorted out of a room and then wrestled into handcuffs by a city marshal on January 8. Hargrave yelled as the officer picked her up from the floor and pushed her towards an exit, commanding her to "stop resisting".

Hargrave had asked several questions at the meeting, with board president Anthony Fontana responding she was out of order, declaring the meeting was not a question and answer session.

The superintendent has since stated that there are no plans to press charges against Hargrave.

"You're making our jobs more hard", she said. When called upon, she tried to ask her question.

'Sir, do not, ' she says as he touches her. The Constitution prohibits the government from punishing or retaliating against people for expressing their views, and the fact that a schoolteacher was arrested at a public meeting of the school board is especially troubling.

He orders Hargrave to leave the premises and she follows him out.

"His job is to make sure that we have orderly board meetings, he knows what our policy is and he knows how to handle it", he said.

"I don't think it needed to come to the extreme that it came to", she said.

It was expected to be a contentious meeting, she said. "She's a great teacher".

"What happened here tonight, the way that females are treated in Vermilion Parish - I have never seen a man removed from this room", she said.

Records indicate Deyshia Hargrave was booked into the city jail with remaining after being forbidden and resisting an officer.

The teacher was still jailed and later released on bond.

Aside from these remarks, our association will honor Ms. Hargrave's wishes and refrain from any additional comments at this time, as the case is ongoing.
